Gum Care Habits to Practice Daily

Your dentist in Yorkville explains that fall is the perfect time to brush up on your oral health and gum care habits.

Practice the following healthy teeth and gum habits to protect yourself against gingivitis and the more serious periodontal disease.

Brush Twice a Day for Gum Care

Brushing your teeth twice a day with a soft bristled toothbrush will remove food debris. Brush for two minutes every day. If you have a hard time keeping track, set a timer. Also, remember to brush with fluoride toothpaste for good gum care.

If left untouched food particles will convert to plaque. Plaque is that sticky substance that remains on your teeth if you don’t brush. If you don’t remove plaque, it will eventually convert to tartar, which must be removed by a professional.

Flossing Removes Plaque

Dr. Judy Sturm & Associates recommends flossing every day to keep your teeth free from debris. Floss around and between each tooth making sure to remove all of the food particles and debris. Unlike your toothbrush, floss is the only thing that can clean below your gum line.

Use an Antibacterial Mouthwash after Brushing

While mouthwashes and mouth rinses are no substitute for twice daily brushing and flossing they will help eliminate bacteria. Use a mouthwash that is also labeled an antibacterial to help keep your teeth strong and your gums healthy.

A Water Jet or Irrigator for Gum Care

Oral water jets stream water in between your teeth to remove food particles, bacteria, and plaque. Add oral irrigation to your morning brushing and flossing routine for a deep and fresh cleaning.

Diet and Gum Care

You really are what you eat when it comes to your body and your teeth and gums. Dr. Judy Sturm recommends eating a well balanced diet that is low in sugar and rich in nutrients, vitamins, and minerals for gum care.
