Tooth bonding is a cosmetic process that uses a composite resin to improve the appearance of a tooth. It’s a conservative way to repair slightly chipped, discolored, or crooked teeth, and even fill in gaps between teeth. Basically, a hard white composite material is shaped over the surface of the tooth. The material bonds with your tooth, and because it comes in a variety of tooth-colored shades, it closely matches your natural enamel for a seamless, natural look.
Bonding can also be used for fillings as a superior alternative to silver amalgam fillings. Most patients prefer bonded fillings for esthetic and health reasons; due to their white colour, they are much less noticeable than amalgams, and they don’t contain mercury.
Bonding is significantly less expensive than other cosmetic treatments and can usually be completed in a single appointment. It does have one drawback, however; a bonded tooth can stain and break more easily than other cosmetic options such as porcelain veneers.
