Sedation Dentistry for Dental Phobia

If you are afraid of the dentist, you are not alone. According to Toronto’s best dentist Dr. Judy Sturm, millions if not billions of people all over the planet suffer from dental anxiety or full-blown dental phobia and that is where sedation dentistry comes in.

Sadly, what most people don’t realize is that leaving small toothaches and puffy gums to their own devices only makes dental problems worse.

More Time in the Dental Chair

Dental anxiety and dental fear will grow because you will have to spend more time in the dentist’s chair. Remember, a simple filling takes much less time than a large cavity and dental crown.

Large cavities most often require dental crowns to keep them strong. It’s also important to remember that gum disease, if not treated right away, can progress to periodontal disease, which cannot be cured.

Sedation Dentistry in Toronto Works

Sedation dentistry takes the anxiety out of sitting in the dentists chair. In most cases, you won’t remember a thing about your dental procedure with dental sedation. You may not even remember being at the dentist’s office at all. Seriously though, there are some things you can do to combat your dental anxiety or dental phobia using sedation dentistry.

Sturm & Associates offers patients their choice of television shows, movies, and music to help set the mood and put you at ease. That along with tender loving care usually does the trick. However, for some patients it is simply not enough.

Nitrous Oxide and Sedation Dentistry

One of the most popular forms of dental sedation is nitrous oxide. Also referred to as laughing gas, this type of sedation dentistry is even suitable for children and seniors.

Nitrous oxide works by relaxing patients using a nosepiece that is connected to a hose that is connected to a machine. The patient breathes the oxygen mixed with laughing gas throughout the procedure. Patients remain fully conscious throughout the procedure experiencing mild euphoria and a feeling of floating.

Because the effects wear off immediately, you can drive yourself to and from your dentist’s office in Toronto.

Moderate Anxiety and Dental Sedation

For people with moderate dental fear or dental phobia, Sturm & Associations recommends oral medication before your dental appointment.

If you are a suitable candidate for oral sedation, you will take a pill the night before your procedure. You will take another about an hour before you have your dental appointment. You must have someone accompany you to and from the procedure, as you will be drowsy before and after your treatment or treatments.

During your dental procedure, you are monitored at all times with more medication given if needed. You are totally relaxed throughout your procedure, and won’t remember much if anything at all about your trip to the dentist.
